  1. Nice. These boards are pretty neat! It looks like there are already a couple of carbon fiber skateboard manufacturers out there. Seems particularly useful for longboards. On the shortboard side, I wonder if the longevity would outweigh the expense?
  2. @JohnC, 9,000lbs is quite a bit of pressure. You're definitely headed towards needing engineering support unless you can find or adapt something off-the-shelf. If you're willing to do the calculations on your end, Rock West Composites does have a Build Your Own Tube tool. They have a variety of existing mandrel sizes (ID), and the OD is virtually unlimited. You could talk to @John Kimball about this. You could also possibly under size your tube and then bore and polish it out to your required dimension and tolerance. You could also bore it out, apply a coating to the ID, and then bore and polish it to size. Is there a particular reason this needs to be made from composite? Are there weight limitations? It seems like aluminum or steel might be a better fit.
  3. You could certainly use aluminum parts. I'd suggest anodizing them. Alternatively, you could go with something 3D Printed with a threaded insert. If you were to go the 3D printed route, I'd go with something like PETG or Nylon. You could even use CF PETG or Nylon.
  4. Hey @tenmiles, welcome to Composites Community! I've moved this over to the RWC subforum. There isn't an off the shelf product AFAIK. But anything can be put together with enough resources 🙂 Does this need to be made from carbon fiber?
  5. You can get a Carbon Fiber Ring from Element Ring Co.!
  6. You can make a Carbon Fiber Poké Ball with this guide on YouTube!
  7. You can grab an ultra-light Carbon Fiber Toilet from West Marine!
  8. Hi @SDP92, Welcome to Composites Community! You could use something like this Carbon Fiber Telescoping Tube, and bond on these compression fittings if you want to DIY. This is likely something that @Rock West Composites can make for you! I'm tagging @John Kimball and @Emily Lewis. One of them will be able to help you out with this if you're interested in having one or more made.
  9. Hey @B Davis, welcome to Composites Community! This is something @John Kimball or @Rylan might be able to help you out with. Most of our carbon fiber tubes shouldn't have a problem with that weight. @John Kimballcan get back to you on the right diameter to go with in general. The bigger thing you'll need to suss out are mounts, and that might be the determining factor of your tube size. Though you mentioned you want this to be on the stiff side, you may actually want to have some flex built in. Otherwise, you're tying in two opposing sides of the boat that may be experience torsion, and the railings you're planning to attach this to likely weren't designed for that kind of load. We have some mounting options for carbon fiber tubes with a product series called CARBONNect. In fact, depending on the size of your railings, one of these CARBONNect Angled Connectors may work and allow some lateral flex, but it wouldn't help with the torsion. Unfortunately most of these currently have MOQs (Minimum Order Quantities). That aside, you could always resort to a broom stick and duct tape 😄. I'm sure others will have some input!
  10. Hey @Mark Christensen, That actually doesn't look too bad, but @John Kimball is the expert here. He could correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd probably just cut off the rough bits, give it a quick sanding and a shot of paint. Otherwise leave it alone. We've actually got a DIY guide on how to make a rock guard for your bike to prevent things like this in the future:
  11. Hey @Barocky14, any time you have questions feel free to post them! Doing so is the best way to get a quick response and ensure the answer's out there for people to find in the future!
  12. I'd like to build a small drone. What thickness of carbon fiber plate should I be looking for?
  13. If you're new here, please take a minute to register. It'd be great to know more about you and your experience! Feel free to make a thread and introduce yourself in the this new member introduction forum.
  14. I'm an admin here. I'm pretty new to composites but have been incredibly interested for quite some time! Lately, I've been getting really into 3D Printing. It's been a hobby of mine for quite some time, but I finally feel like I'm getting proficient enough with CAD and my printer to turn out great parts on a consistent basis. I plan on starting to print carbon fiber reinforced parts soon. But first, I need to upgrade my printer to handle the higher heat and abrasion that comes along with printing carbon fiber reinforced material. Some projects on my list are: Carbon Fiber Mirror Covers 3D Printed Carbon Fiber Mounts 3D Printer Carbon Fiber Brackets
  15. Seen cool Carbon Fiber Stuff? Share it! What's the coolest thing you've seen made from Carbon Fiber?
