I am looking for a sample of Kevlar to use in an experiment. I am a Technical Manager for Rentokil, the world's largest pest control company. I am experimenting with non-conductive materials that rodents will not chew through.

Hey @Wiley, welcome to Composites Community!

It sounds like you're looking for a sample of Kevlar/Aramid fabric. Is that correct?

My name is Jason, I have been building bikes, and cars for decades, and into composites since the 80’s. Got away for a while, now I’m building a Stage 3 turbocharged Smart Car, and I’m looking at making a carbon fiber roof, and some other small parts. I have built a lot of motorcycles.

Super cool @Jason Fairclough! I used to ride quite a bit 🙂

Are you planning on making parts for your car, bike, or both?

Does anyone know where I can purchase composite molding board, I need a piece 50”L  x 60”W  x 6”T I have a CNC machine so I can machine my mold, just can’t find anything large enough.

    Hey Jason,

What you're looking for is often called Tooling Board or Modeling Board. I believe you can epoxy some of this tooling board together if you can't find larger pieces elsewhere.

@Emily Lewis at Rock West Composites may be able to help you out with sourcing some!

Hello, I'm new here. I've learned a lot about 3D printing, and now I'm thinking about a mixed material project that would utilize some carbon fiber composite bits with 3D printing parts. Thought I'd check this place out and learn a bit.

Have any of you used 3D printing in with your journey in composites?

I 3D print quite a bit! I've been wanting to incorporate carbon fiber into some of my prints for a while now. One thing I've been thinking about doing is adding in some carbon fiber stringers internally to the prints. I think the best way to do this is to make a void in the 3D model for the stringer, print up to the top layer of the void, add the stringer, and resume the print.

I've also been wanting to try out carbon fiber infused filament, but I hear it's rather rough on nozzles. Have you tried any of the CF filaments yet?

Great question! I've been looking for some more and better resources. There just doesn't seem to be a whole lot out there.

Something I've been thinking about adding is an overview section, maybe even a couple of videos.

Is this something you and @jenn4536would be interested in?

Hey all, I'm Dave K.! I'm an engineer from California and have worked in aerospace for a couple of decades.

I'm hoping to gather some composites knowledge here and network!

Welcome @Dave K.! Great to have you onboard.

Did you start out in aerospace or did you work your way into it?

Hi everyone, I've been closely following the use of advanced composite materials in aerospace applications. The strength-to-weight ratio of these materials is revolutionizing the industry. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the future of composites in aerospace, and if there are any specific innovations that have caught your eye recently?

Absolutely! Between composites and 3D printing, there is so much to leverage. Many things that used to be impossible, near-impossible, or extremely difficult can now be achieved in hours. It's pretty nuts!

I'm really excited to see the kinds of vehicles that will come out over the next decade thanks to this technology! Who knows what's gone into the B-21 Raider, for example, but I'd bet it's just the tip of the iceberg that we'll see over the next few decades as these materials evolve.

Does anyone know where to go to get more experience/training for working with composites? I'm new to this and it would be greath to get some one on one instruction. Online or in person, although I would prefer in person

Easy Composites has a YouTube channel with some pretty great tutorials on various carbon fiber techniques and processes.

Heck yeah. Here's a few youtube video examples of how they're made.

.... and a more classic one.

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing @AJ Sawyer

I love factory videos! It's definitely quite a bite more involved than I would have thought. The video from HEAD was especially interesting with all of the different combinations of prepreg they use to form the racket.

Have you made one of these carbon fiber rackets before?

I worked for Monogram Systems, now Safran Water and Waste Systems in Carson CA.

They developed this carbon composite toilet (the pedestal is carbon fiber), and not only is it lighter than typical aircraft toilets, but still able to withstand a lot of crap!  On top of that, because of its lightness it's much easier for the maintenance techs to replace (they tend to get used often).

    That seems excessive 😄

    Those operate on vacuum right?

    Hello, everyone!

I was exploring this topic and really liked the idea of carbon fiber keychains! I went hunting around and found some cool stuff, including carbon fiber keychain pocket knives!

I also stumbled upon some carbon fiber bracelets that looked pretty neat. I might have to get one as a gift

Do you think it would be pretty easy for a beginner to make a carbon fiber bracelet?

I think carbon fiber bracelets would be pretty easy to make. In fact, you could make them out of some carbon fiber tubing then sand and clear coat it!

I actually have a carbon fiber ring that @Adam gave me 🤣

I'm wanting to use it on a small hawk, he's under 2lbs himself. Ideally the camera and mounting system would be no more than 200g (roughly 1/2 lb), but the lighter the better. I have the ability to test heavier prototypes on lager birds that can accommodate more weight, but the Harris' Hawk is my target species

There are some super lightweight options for drones out there. GoPro makes a couple that are under 200g. How about this action camera from Team Black Sheep? It's 56g with the battery. Running 1080p the camera above is supposed to last for 90mins which I'd think is plenty long enough.

They have smaller cameras, but they seem to mostly use external power.

On to the harness itself... usually with carbon fiber you need some sort of a mold. I imagine you can't put a cast on a hawk, but maybe it would be possible to scan it? Or use an existing model? I imagine it would go on the underside of the bird?

I work with birds of prey (think falconry) and have wanted to get areal footage from my bird's point of view for years now. Problem is go pro cameras are too bulky and heavy for the birds to wear and they also dont have any practical way to attach to the bird.

Recently I found a really tiny camera and now I'm wondering how I might be able to design a harness system and camera housing out of carbon fiber to attach to my birds. I'm just on the beginning planning process now but the idea has me really excited and I had to share 🙂

I think this would be a super cool! There are some pretty small drone cameras around. How much weight can these birds carry?

I saw some stocking stuffer ideas that seemed cool and easy that I'd like to try. Mostly keychains, bottle openers or even a money clip (might be nice to give with cash/gift card type holiday gifts for friends or co-workers).

Anyone have any other ideas? I'm new to composites and I feel like my inexperience has limited the scope of my ideas.

I really like the keychain idea. I have a carbon fiber keychain that I like a lot. So much so that because it's my go-to set of keys and the fob battery now needs replacing way ahead of schedule 😄

I've been wanting to make some carbon fiber keychains as a side project, but time just hasn't allowed. What kind of keychain designs did you have in mind?

What are the tabs you’re referring to?

    No specific holiday projects.

    Sorry Richie, I'd missed this.

So on the back of mirror covers for cars there are tabs that allow it to snap into the mirror covers. I can take a picture later and post it here.

    Hi guys!

New here and new to composites. Looking to learn and connect with other people and figure out how composites can help me with some of my projects.

    Glad to be here 🙂

I read a fascinating article in Racecar Engineering magazine.  The article broke down all the major formulas for suspension and steering geometry into easy step by step instructions with descriptive examples.  This was a simple process that did not require CAD.  It only needed a scientific calculator.

Is there any resource that can walk me through the basic math and physics regarding structures that consist of layers of bidirectional weave composites, core materials and the resins?

@John Kimball might have some resources. He actually teaches a composites class 🙂

Do you happen to have a link to that article!?

  18. Anyone have any interesting composites projects they're planning to work on over the holidays this year? 🙂

The only thing I have planned right now is to redo the carbon fiber vinyl I put on my side view mirrors. I still want to make some real CF mirror covers, but I'm stuck on how to go about making the tabs that are needed.
