I’m a new carbon fiber bicycle frame repair guy..

have a few tests and tries so far..

I’m using shrink tape to compress several layers of repair patches over prepared failure spots..

my first question is how much tape overlap is necessary?

im doing about 5% - 15% overlap seems ok. But I have no experience

second question

how to support repair patches over holes made by removing damaged area?

most frame tubes are dead ends and cannot insert bladder..

@John Kimball or @Joshua Lyon might have some input on this!

The amount of tape used varies by the application and is not an exact science. For prepregs, we typically use a tape spacing of 0.10"-0.15". Assuming a roll width of 0.75", this equates to between 80% and 86% overlap. For wet layups (depending on the resin viscosity), you can get away with closer to 50% overlap.

For tubes where the ends are inaccessible, adhering a piece of semi-rigid material to the inside of the tube is one of the best ways to create a backing to build on top of. This can be done with a thin sheet of ABS or similar material. This is similar to how drywall patches are done (example: https://www.lowes.com/pd/3M-Back-Plate-6-0-in-x-5-5-in-Drywall-Repair-Patch/1000551395)
