Carbon Fiber Plane Weave Properties

Question

Posted

Hi,

I did an ASTM D3039 test on 3K Plane weave (4 layers, vacuum bagging) with epoxy 105/205, 1.6mm thickness of sample and 138 mm gauge length cured at room temperature.

I got a Tensile Strength of 330MPa and a Youngs Modulus of 17 GPa.

Are these results within the range?

@Mason Souther do you have any input you could provide on this?

Sure do! Dependent primarily on what the fiber is. Plain weave is basically a 50/50 split of 0/90 fibers, so you can napkin math based on:

Fiber strength (data sheets are readily available) x 0.50 (half fibers in 0-degree) x 0.60 (assuming a fiber volume of ~60%).

Otherwise, manufacturers sometimes list fabric composite strength/modulus, which won't vary much with different resins.
